My teacher said that it can’t be on any of the following:
Abortion
smoking
obesity
patriot act
gay marriage
gun control
alternative energy sources
school violence
religion
drinking age
legalization of drugs
That is why I’m left to ask someone else to give me ideas.
Please list several ideas ^.^

Barbie does/does not influence little girls’ self esteem
the media does/does not influence the way women carry themselves
You can also argue for/against PETA
whether censorship in the US is becoming extreme (no nude models in schools for art, etc, constantly rewriting textbooks to make them more P.C.)
For or against disciplining children in spanking (there are actually interesting new studies that suggests it might cause sexual deviance in children when they grow up…check msnbc)
Advertisitng that targets kids
whether fast food restaurants are responsible for obesity rates in america
if a casino is responsible for recognizing and not report a person gambling addiction, and if so, should bartenders refuse to serve alcoholics?
good luck
i like to take the risky route and argue the "evil" end of topics…it’s fun to play the devil’s advocate, plus you can expand your own ideas of the argument, and maybe learn something about a view that opposes yours:) The teachers I’ve had seem to enjoy when you write a convincing argument for something you are against..especially if you make valid points and can get people to think on "both sides"
Topic: The pros and cons of nuclear energy
There are a lot of arguments for and against nuclear energy, and they can be easily researched. I teach this in my senior English classes, and the students always get their hooks into this one. The ideas really flow, and the resulting essays become easier to write.
Excerpt from the web source below:
"…Should laws regarding minimum wage (or the forty-hour work week) be revised?
Should mandatory (or voluntary) prayer be permitted in public schools?
Should the government provide child day care centers for working parents?
Should donors or their families be compensated for organ donations? How should people be selected to receive donor organs? …"
How about immigration , Healthcare or sex before marriage?
The No Child Left Behind Act (it’s a freaking joke. It left ALL the children behind).
Federal Funding for libraries (they just keep cutting it – look at the closing of the Salinas (CA) libraries)
The new Guardisil shots for HPV (it has been causing some pretty bad side effects that are not publicised, rashes, etc. Also, they are developing one for boys. It’s a good idea, good product, but why are they hiding the negative side effects? Why are they saying that it protects against HPV when it only protects from 4 out of 80 strains of HPV.)
I’d go with the Guardisil shot idea. There are LOTS of pictures on the internet of the side effects. Also, it is clearly a wonderful idea, which is why a lot of people defend it, even though it has negative sides, too. I have heard a lot of young people say, "Well, I’ve had the shot, so I can’t get HPV now…" YES YOU CAN. Just not those 4 most common strains. But there are still 76 more strains out there. It could encourage unsafe sex if girls think they can’t get HPV… especially when it is blatantly untrue. There is a LOT of misleading information about it.
