I am a foreign national currently residing in California as non-resident alien (J-1 visa). I am interested in acquiring a handgun and a rifle for target practice. As far as I understand, the State of California does not restrict gun possession by aliens, but the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 specifically prohibits gun possession by nonimmigrant aliens (922d5) UNLESS they have a hunting license (922y2A, part 2).
Is it correct that I shall be able to lawfully acquire California-legal firearms and ammunition after having qualified for and received my California Resident Hunting License, and that no other documents except such license and verification of legal status in the US will be needed?

Not in California nor anywhere else in the USA, it would be a violation of Federal law.
@Gray. Yes. It appears you can with a valid hunting license.
