I live in Cook County, IL. and heard that it is illegal to have ammunition mail order delivered to your door. Will I need to have it shipped to a FFL licensed dealer? I have an FOID card but don’t know how this comes into play if mail ordering ammo.

I believe it is legal. My suggestion is, if you find that places like Cabelas, georgia-arms.com, or others will ship to you no questions asked, then it is perfectly legal. These places will tell you up-front if it is not, because the last thing they want is a legal battle.
Anyway, as far as I know, Cook County laws only banned the purchase of certain pistols, but the grandfather/legacy laws do not have any jurisdiction over ammo sales. That being said, you should feel free to order what you want and have no worries as far as I know.
Most large mail order ammunition dealers will NOT sell to Co. We will Not sell to Cook Co. We are currently looking up the county code but generally we take our que from the larger dealers.
