I’m interested in purchasing a rifle from Armalite that requires a Federal Firearms License – I am not a current gun owner (nor have I ever been, despite spending over 6 years in the Army), and looking over the FFL categories (dealer, manufacturer, importer and collector), I don’t technically fit into any of those, except collector, but the gun I want to purchase does not meet the criteria for being classified as a collectible weapon. (The weapon in question is an M15A4 carbine in .223/5.56mm.) Can anybody detail the process I would have to go through to be able to purchase this weapon from Amralite? Or would it be easier (or cheaper/sensible) to try to procure one from a gun shop? Any help at all in trying to figure this out would be appreciated.

first, what state are you in.
Second, you do not buy a rifle from armalite any more than you buy a car from toyota.
You go to the car dealer, he has bought a bunch of cars from toyota and he resells them to you.
in the same way you go to a gun dealer, and he sells you an armalite.
Just like the car dealer can special order you a car from toyota, the gun dealer can special order an armalite if he does not have one.
Even if you had an FFL, armalite would probably only deal with you if you were buying more than 20 guns.
Unless you know someone that is an FFL, you will need to go to a gun shop. Nice choice, by the way. I’m thinking about that exact same rifle myself.
you cannot by this gun in a full auto model due to the auto weapons ban of 86
unless this gun was made before 86
i know many ppl who have ar15′s they don’t need a ffl
you only need an ffl from the atf if you are going to be a dealer, or collector, or a manufacturer
it would be easier to get something through a dealer, because armalite isn’t going to sell you a military rifle unless yuo are law enforcement or military
for a pre 86 full auto weapon be ready to spend upward of $20k because they are a hot ticket right now and there aren’t many left
look for dealers who sell ar15′s or an even better rifle that doesn’t have the stupid probs of the m16 gas impingement system look at the heckler&koch hk416
they have some sort of civilian model, but it may be easier to find a modified m4
Not sure if Armalite would even sell it direct but unless you have an FFL the rifle has to be shipped to an FFL holder and that person has to run the background check required to give you possesion of the rifle. It’s probably simpler to go to your favorite shop and have them do the order themselves.
As far as I know there is a FFL curios and relics category but you aren’t even one of those unless you have done all the paperwork and gotten the license from BATFE.
and for those confused this model isn’t full auto. The gentleman don’t even mention wanting a fully automatic weapon.
Do not buy the gun from armalite, or a dealer. Find someone who is selling the gun second hand, and buy it from them. That way there’s no paper trail. I have never bought anything except pistols from a dealer. BTW, nice choice.
