Barack Obama supports handgun registration and licensing…

I know that the NRA believes people should be unimpeded and unregulated on gun ownership. I disagree. I do not object to the lawful use and ownership of firearms, but I do think it is entirely it appropriate for the state to monitor it. Too many of these guns end up in the hands of criminals even though they were originally purchased by people who did not have a felony. I’ll continue to be in favor of handgun law registration requirements and licensing requirements for training. [Chicago Defender, 7/5/01]

and more…
The package closes the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card loopholes which resulted in the shooting out in Melrose Park. We’re eliminating 17 specific assault weapons. There is no reason why anybody should need an assault weapon to protect themselves or their family,’ Obama said. ‘We’re limiting handgun sales to one a month. We’re calling for handgun registration. It’s very hard right now to track whether or not a felon has turned in his weapons or if he has a FOID card because we don’t know how many weapons he has purchased. [Chicago Defender, 2/20/01]

Opposes civilian concealed carry

I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.
— Mendell, David, "From Promise to Power" (2007), p. 251.

I am not in favor of concealed weapons. I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.
— Pittsburg Tribune-Review (April 2, 2008).
[Obama] backed federal legislation that would ban citizens from carrying weapons, except for law enforcement. He cited Texas as an example of a place where a law allowing people to carry weapons has "malfunctioned" because hundreds of people granted licenses had prior convictions.
"National legislation will prevent other states’ flawed concealed-weapons laws from threatening the safety of Illinois residents," Obama said.

Opposes possession of most semi-automatic rifles

Obama has stated the government needs to permanently reinstate an "assault weapons" ban.
(Obama Calls for Permanent Assault Weapons Ban to Combat Inner-City Violence, Associated Press [via Fox News] [July 15, 2007] and http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues.gun.html)
(McCain voted against the 1994 crime bill that contained an "assault weapons" ban [see the latter link].)

Voted for a federal ban on most military surplus ammo

Voted in 2005 to classify all Full Metal Jacket ammo in the following calibers as armor-piercing (since they are capable both of being fired from a handgun and of penetrating Kevlar bullet-resistant vests):

223 Remington
308 Winchester
Soviet 7.62×39

Opposes protecting firearms manufacturers from lawsuits due to the misuse of their products.

In July, 2005 Obama voted against S. 397 that passed by a wide margin (65-31) and became law in October, 2005. This act prohibits "civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages, injunctive or other relief resulting from the misuse of their products by others."

Probably supports local handgun bans

The campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said that he "believes that we can recognize and respect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the right of local communities to enact common sense laws to combat violence and save lives. Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional."

(See http://www.scotuswiki.com/index.php?title=DC_v._Heller for background on the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, before the Supreme Court, that will decide the constitutionality of a civilian handgun ban in Washington, D.C.)
Opposed the nomination of Supreme Court justices John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Recent Supreme Court justices John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. were instrumental to a favorable Second Amendment ruling in the Heller case mentioned above. Obama voted against the nomination of Roberts and Alito. (McCain voted for the nomination of both justices.) (Roberts’ roll call vote, Alito’s roll call vote)

Response for A peaceful Women article
Response for A peaceful Women Why She Carries a Gun article
Crime and gun ownership in America has a correlation. I strongly agree that the nation needs strong gun control regulation. Possession of a gun increases the act of violence, homicide and suicide in the United States of America. However, in “A peaceful Women Why She Carries a Gun.” article Linda Hasselstorm convinced me why she ended up carrying a hand gun. According to Hassel storm article, she was reputedly assaulted and attacked by intruders and drunken people. The need to carry a hand gun wasn’t came from mingles fear but from her past experience. The two young men campers beside her tent loudely discussed what they would do to her after dark; the car with four men followed her and jumped out to assault her luckly left her because another car showed up, the person trespassing her property with gun raised the gun at her and other incidents forced her to carry a pistol.
After she bought and start carrying a gun, chances to be assaulted by others came decreases. For example, the four drunken men who zipping their pants left her property peacefully after she pulled her gun. In the other incident, the person who followed her for at least thirty miles stop and disappeared after she showed him her gun.
To conclude, Hasselstorm convinced me carrying a gun helps to protect self, keep the balance of power and helps to be able to protect ourselves from the incoming assaults.

I just received an email saying they are trying to hide gun control in an IRS revision. I understand they are trying to charge everyone per gun on your income tax. Charge you a tax for selling a gun. Fine you for not reporting ownership of a gun, with jail time. Gives the government the right to come into your house and inspect your gun collection.
I really can’t see how this could have gotten past the NRA and other sportsmen associations.
Especially after the supreme court decision last year affirming the second amendment. But then again, many cities and states are still illegalling restricting gun ownership by lawful people.
Thanks truth seeker, I was simply trying to find an answer to a question. You liberals need to get a life. It is not necessary to attack, instead of simply replying intelligently.
I simply asked a question concerning the status of an actual bill and get attacked by liberals calling me names. Does that make any sense? I simply posted the facts in the bill .

Reading a article about a pastoor in Kentucky who told his congregation to bring gun to the church to promote safe gun use. heres the article

A pastor in the US state of Kentucky told his flock to bring handguns to church in what he said was an effort to promote safe gun ownership.
Pastor Ken Pagano told parishioners to bring their unloaded guns to New Bethel Church in Louisville for a service celebrating the right to bear arms.
He said he acted after church members voiced fears the Obama administration could tighten gun control laws. When the service began, some 200 people were present, AP news agency said.
"We are wanting to send a message that there are legal, civil, intelligent and law-abiding citizens who also own guns," Mr Pagano told the congregation.
"If it were not for a deep-seated belief in the right to bear arms, this country would not be here today," he said. Ken Pagano, pastor of New Bethel Church in Louisville, Kentucky
The pastor also held a handgun raffle, as well as providing information on gun safety.
"I wish more churches did this, I wish more people did this," the Louisville Courier-Journal quoted one attendee, Doreen Rogers, as saying.
"For some reason, most people think that carrying guns is sinful. It’s not. I think my life is worth protecting."
About 10 members of a private local militia also attended, the Courier-Journal said.
A coalition of religious groups and campaigners held a rival gun-free event at the same time on the other side of Louisville.
"The idea of wearing guns to churches or any sacred space I think many people find deeply troubling," organiser Terry Taylor told AP.
In the US, the right to bear arms is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the US Constitution.
There are thought to be more than 200 million firearms in private hands.
But some gun owners fear that the new administration in the White House could try to challenge or amend some gun ownership laws.
Critics of the laws, meanwhile, link high levels of gun crime with high levels of gun ownership.

does anyone else think gun ownership laws needs to be changed or tightened in the US, do you think the constitution needs to be changed on this matter well since it was written 300 years ago and there was no police or army which there is now?
