In contrast to Democrats (most supported gun control, some opposed it), most Republicans supported the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms for every American, especially in reasonable grounds. But some Republicans supported gun control by banning guns, even for protection.

Fred Thompson is opposed to most gun control laws. Speaking of the Virginia Tech massacre, he said:

"Whenever I’ve seen one of those ‘Gun-free Zone’ signs, especially outside of a school filled with our youngest and most vulnerable citizens, I’ve always wondered exactly who these signs are directed at. Obviously, they don’t mean much to the sort of man who murdered 32 people just a few days ago."

Although his record in the Senate on guns is generally mixed. Thompson voted pro-gun 19 times and anti-gun 14 times. Additionally, Thompson voted for the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban, which restricts ownership and use of guns or ammunition by individuals convicted of misdemeanor or felony domestic violence.

McCain’s record on gun control is mixed. He co-sponsored the Gun Show Loophole Closing and Gun Law Enforcement Act of 2001. This act would reduce the number of gun shows, require gun-owners to purchase trigger locks, and allow federal agents to arrest those who violate federal gun laws. However, McCain has frequently voted in support of the Second Amendment, such as voting against background checks at gun shows and voting in support of prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers. In August of 1999, McCain said he was open to voting for an assault weapon ban, depending on the details. However, he still voted against the Federal Assault Weapons Ban and the efforts to renew it, as well as the Brady Bill.

A top official of the National Rifle Association said McCain has been a reliable ally of gun owners despite divisions with the powerful lobbying group on some issues. NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre told The Associated Press "…We’re not foolish enough to ignore the vast areas of agreement in which John McCain has been a friend to gun owners." The Republican presidential nominee has voted against a ban on assault-type weapons with restrictions which were objected.

A study by the U.S Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms surveyed 1530 investigations by the US BATF into illegal gun trafficking from July 1996 through December 1998. The study reports the portion of cases that were the result of each of the five gun trafficking violations:

46% straw purchase
21% unlicensed sellers
14% gun shows and flea markets
14% stolen from licensed dealers
10% stolen from residences..

are these percentages listed above categorical or quantitative? Please explain.. thank you.
Can you please just try and help you instead of making mean comments.. thanks

1) hearsay is "good enough reason" to ban a book
…The State Bd of Ed banned the children’s book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" because they confused the author, Bill Martin with another author, Bill Martin who wrote "Ethical Marxism". Instead of banning the book, these dim bulbs banned anything by Bill Martin. The board member who introduced the measure even admitted that she just took someone’s word for it.

2) marijuana (personal use amt): TX penalties:
…Possession — 2 oz or less, class B misdemeanor, incarceration 180 days, fine ,000
while in Indiana: possesion < 1 oz can result in a few hundred dollar fine, attendance in a drug class, participation in community service and agreeing to unsupervised probation

3) In 2009, Texas executed a mentally retarded man for rape. The Supreme Court disallowed the penalty back in 2002 but left the decision up to the states as to what constitutes mental retardation. Texas has has joined with Mississippi and Alabama in the idea that someone with an IQ above 66 is not impaired.

4) Texas gun laws:
…NO waiting period to purchase firearms
…NO safety training is required to obtain a license
…NO requirement to register firearms with the police
…NO background checks done at gun shows or for private sales
…NEITHER state police nor federal NICS perform a background check
…NO mandatory requirement for locking devices be sold with guns
…NO license or permit is required to buy handguns
…NO ability for the police to limit carrying concealed handguns

I realize those to the far right will applaud these situations and the far left will heap scorn on them.

I am looking for responses from the middle-of-the road respondent, NOT the extremists.
I’d like to hear what centrists think.

Gun Control – Citizen Safety Act. This would require all states to begin an immediate ban on all mail-order gun sales. Gun shows will be required to do Federal background checks before any sale to walk-up customers. No citizen would be licensed to carrying handguns except for very specific needs i.e. gem couriers, bank guards, etc.]. There would be a mandatory five year sentence added to any crime committed with a handgun.
