I have heard this quote DOZENS of times referring to the Patriot act:
"Those that would sacrifice Freedom for Security deserve neither."
-Ben Franklin
However, why don’t we apply that same quote to gun control? Why would you sacrifice the freedom of Americans to bear arms for a (false) sense of security??
Or to you guys just like some freedoms more than others?

Right on brotha. Gun control isn’t what the founding fathers had in mind. They didn’t have a national army in mind either. They wanted the right to bear arms for every citizen so that should our sovereign nation be attacked all citizens could defend it to their dying breath. Now that the corupt government officials are taking more and more control of the government they are taking more and more control of our "rights" well atleast whats left of them.
I think that it would/will be a sad day in America the day our guns are taken away.
If I want to own a gun I should be able to own one.
Your question makes no sense in this context. I’m not sure you know what you’re talking about.
I think the false sense of security comes from owning a gun and feeling indestructible because of it.
Have a nice day!
We have EVERY right to carry a gun. It states this in the constitution. anyone who is against it doesn’t realize that we run the risk of being dominated by police and other government officials if we ever have guns taken away.
Awesome quote by Ben Franklin. It isnt applied to gun control because freedom is intangible guns are tangible so government goes after what they can touch.
Every man, woman has the right to keep and bear arms end of discussion! There’s nothing to debate, nothing to twist or trump up. No it doesn’t pertain to organized militias and no it has nothing to do with war.
Have you ever read the 2nd amendment?
The purpose of the 2nd amendment isnt to protect your family from boogeymen and to protect all the crap you have wasted your money on, its to protect democracy from people like Bush and Cheney.
Even the USSC has stated that we have no right to own weapons outside of a militia. Miller 1937.
When there was no gun control we were much safer! Id rather be shot then stabbed or blugened to death to all those who want to take them away. Someday when AMerica needs its people they will be without arms try trowing rocks at tanks and you get what the plaastians get when they demonstrate
I live in the South.. everyone here has a gun and I have no problem with it.. I just think we need to do a little better job of making sure Charles Manson down the street doesn’t get one if we can.
the PATRIOT act ( it is an acronym) has limited gun rights by making it impossible to buy ammo from many stores. Gun rights activists should ABHOR the PATRIOT act. Nice analogy
I got my 40 cal. Glock and anyone wants it can have it; one bullet at a time.
The aristocrats have already made most people believe the Right to Bare Arms is about Duck hunting.
Our freedom went out when they banned automatic weapons back in the early 1900′s.
We need the right to own any weapon the government has in it’s arsenal
Go big Red Go
Most gun control doesn’t want to take away any guns, they want restrictions like no cop-killer bullets and track assault rifles so they can be recovered if stolen. And most would agree that some sort of control should be in place. For example, do you think grenade launchers should be legal to own? Probably not, even though they are technically "arms".
Guns don’t kill people, people do. Out of fear, some are blaming the ills of society on a tool. Since criminals do not obey the law, only honest people would be disarmed through gun control legislation.
Don’t forget Hitler also spoke to the people and said to give up their rights and he’ll give them freedom. How many people died in the following years. Something like 12million. 6million being Jews. I don’t own a gun, but with all that’s going on with Lord Bush and the unPatriot act, I think it’s time for me to do some shopping.
I agree with you slightly that banning guns may provide a false sense of security, however a gun in the hands of an average citizen is not going to be used for security or protection. It will be used in the wrong way – as they are now. Kids shooting each other by accident and in schools, would be criminals given weapons to do whatever they will and people using the guns as a means to end disputes in the heat of anger.
And I can’t stress enough that the right given to us to bear arms was at a time when we were fighting wars on our OWN soil. We are not now. So why do people need guns? The moment that any war comes to my homeland, I promise you, I’ll pick up a gun and defend my country and fellow countrymen. Until such time, I am scared as heck of my fellow countrymen jazzed on ego with a gun in their hands!!
i would like to tell you my argument for gun control but my free speech license is expired.
fear the government that fears your gun
BULLSEYE!
Anybody out there who was attacked in front of a policeman?
Where’s a cop when you really need one ?
Settle down cow.. people. Gun ownership has no place in modern society. If guns were better restricted, and scarcely anyone owned one, who could shoot. You people want to turn this into the wild west.
Let me put it like this. If I was somewhere that was being held up, I don’t know about your aim once nerves are mixed in and you know what? Maybe I DON’T feel safer with you engaging in a gun battle because you want to play GWB, and be the old west hero.
Understandably all guns can’t be removed and a few might fall into the wrong hands. But think of this, the criminal, knowing odds are he is the only one armed will not be interested in me, he will want whatever and then leave. Not riled up and frantic, then panic and kill someone.
I agree with aviator. I would have to say people should have a right to own guns. However, not everybody should have the right. Gun control doesn’t mean taking away guns. Gun control is a method of making a safer environment. I think the Brady Bill was a good idea. Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is a good thing. I also believe gun owners should have to complete some kind of training so that they know how to properly use it. Statistics show that a very small percentage of gun owners are successful at defending themselves when they actually need to use their gun. Also, if you have a gun in your home, you are much more likely to get shot.
I have to agree with you. People are just afraid of guns because of all these gangstas and their posse’s carrying guns and shooting up their own neighborhoods. And upset little kids who think its a good idea to take guns to schools or malls and shoot the place up.
However, if you go to a farm or talk to some people who might be referred to as "country bumpkins," they know how to use and respect their guns and use them for hunting and protection. People who know how to use guns and who respect the kind of power guns produce are likely to teach their kids about the guns as well. And this will make the kids respect the guns and know how to use them, thus they will be less likely to blow off their head or the head of a friend. As in most aspects of life, a little education and knowledge will help you to succeed and not kill yourself or someone you love. Thanks and have a nice day.
That’s a fair question.
To me the answer lies in where we draw the line re the freedom of an individual to own "arms".
I’m guessing you’d side with me that individuals should not be allowed to own nuclear weapons or biological weapons or ICBMs. The reason is that the safety of the rest of the citizens takes precedence over your freedom to own these weapons. The same reasoning applies to my belief that automatic weapons, rocket launchers and handguns should only be used by law enforcement.
I’m guessing you’d disagree with the latter…
"In those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own" -Benjamin Franklin, (at age 16), 1772
Its sad but amazing how true the quotes of our fathers ring true today. Anyone with enough brain to see past the cloud of fear can see that the patriot act is far from patriotic. With that said there is nothing more patriotic than our right to keep and use arms. Our founders gave us this right not to hunt or for fun, that was a given, after all how else would you get meat in the past there was no walmart. The people who made this country new full well the horror of your life being in the hands of a tyrinical government that is why many of them fled to this land. King george even dreamed of taking the guns from the colonies, alas we have a amendment securing our legal right to use a weapon to mantain our freedoms
Excellent post!
I’m one of those die-hard "you’ll get my gun when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands" types. People who want to take away our right to bear arms are astonishingly naive.
Some idiots from Cali moved to a small Alaskan community and lived pretty much out in the wilds. They fought some of their neighbors tooth-and-nail over piddly crap like the neighbors wanting to build out there (’cause God knows only Cali hippies have any rights), etc. They were particularly foul to a local hunter and trapper because, even those these morons lived in the wilds, they didn’t "approve" of hunting or trapping.
Guess who they called FIRST when a bear was trying to break down their door?
Just because some people CHOOSE to live in a city doesn’t mean you have the right to tell those of us who live a rural lifestyle not to have guns. When wolves are at YOUR door, we’ll talk. Until then, I’ll keep my guns.
You are not "free" to drive a car or an airplane without some government controls either. Why? Because they are dangerous to the general public if manufactured, distributed, and operated improperly. Your analogy is simpleminded and wrong.
Typical of the gun freaks……as if a gun were your "freedom of speech".
To follow your logic then fine. Let 9 year olds own and operate automatic weapons. NO gun control RIGHT?
The 2nd Ammendment says we have a right to bare arms, so role up your sleeves and bare them!
Actually, I am a liberal that happens to believe in the right to own a gun. I mean, what am I going to do when all there neo-cons go nutso’ and decide to start killing people for being liberal or worse yet, decide to take revenge for losing the 08′ preidential election.
