I was wondering what are the gun laws in Australia [Particularly the New South Wales and ACT regions]. I want to buy a personal defense weapon such as a Pistol [Something like a CZ999 or a S&W revolver], is that illegal in NSW/ACT? If not, can somebody provide a website with information on how to be permitted to acquire them?
Also it would be nice if someone could provide info on hunting rifles as well.

You can get some pistols in Australia, but not for the purpose of personal defence.
In New South Wales the relevant legislation is the Firearms Act 1996, section 12 of which expressly states that defence is not a ‘genuine reason’ for the purposes of granting a firearms licence. That applies to all categories of firearms, including handguns and hunting rifles.
Genuine reasons include target shooting, recreational hunting, vertebrate pest animal control, business or employment, animal welfare and firearms collection.

Well ur probably not going 2 get a firearms lisence for a reason like that. I like shooting and stuff but pistols as self defence in australia is a big nono for a reason to own a firearm. Also if you manage to get past that part there is also the problem of the licencing (sorry 4 my spelling) youwould need a CatH liscence (I think) witch can only be aquired if you are a part of a security force or if you are part of a handun club.
another thing is you are only alowed a certain size of handgun bullet (your not alowed to have a handgun with more than .40c but im not quite sure ) and your also no alowed semi auto pistols (Ones with clips) unless yur in the security idustry
