I’m trying to buy a handgun (first time) just to keep on hand for home protection. I called a local store and they said I shouldn’t expect to pay less than 0. I can’t and won’t pay that much for a handgun.
I’ve heard it’s cheaper to shop online and aimsurplus.com was recommended to me, but they say you have to have a federal firearms license, which as far as I could tell from a google search, is a license to sell firearms. So I’m very confused.

an FFL license means that they are permited by law to buy and sell firearms, so in order to get a firearm from the internet you would need someone who has an FFL to buy the gun and then sell it to you, normally for a small fee.
So, when you order online you have to pay the:
Price of Gun
Price of S&H
Price of FFL
Price of Tax
But if you go to a gun store, you pay:
Price of Gun
Price of Tax
so would it really be cheaper to order online?
There are a million handguns that can be bought for well under $800… in fact, a lot of pretty nice ones.
Check out gunbroker.com, just so you know… it’s not like ebay, you cannot just buy a gun on the internet. It will need to be transfered to a local gun dealer, and you will need to pick it up from them.
- Good Luck!
Whoever said to pay $800 for a handgun is trying to rip you off, Unless you are buying an HK P7M13, or custom 1911 or something like that.
You can buy a good new or used handgun for far less than that. Springfield’s XD I’ve seen sell for $600 at most brand new and $400-$500 used
jgsales.com has SIG P6s and Walther P1/P38s for $250
Here are some good choices less than $800 from gunsamerica.com both new and used
Ruger P85 9mm $285
Springfield XD 9mm, .40 or .45 ACP $400-$500
Glock 17/19/21/22 $400-$500
Walther P99 9mm or .40 $400-$500
Springfield GI 1911 $400-$600
S&W 5906 9mm $269
S&W Model 65/66 .357 revolver $350-$500
Ruger GP100 .357 revolver $350-$500
S&W 586/686 $470-$650
you have a lot of choices in the $500 range, $800 is way too much online or otherwise.
I would like to have heard that conversation. It is likely that you said ‘good quality handgun’ or somesuch. Or maybe the gunstore simply says that to scare off the lookie-lous and make the serious folk do their own research
Buying guns online will save you maybe 10% the key is to know what are good economic handguns. Stay away from asking ‘best’ and ask ‘best buy’
I am sure if you went down to the gunshop you called you would indeed find that 90% of their guns are over your price point, but I am quite confident they do have some of the less expensive firearms.
I think one of the most economical handguns is the Ruger p95, you should be able to get a new one for $300-350
gunbroker.com, auctionarms.com, gunsamerica.com ……….Go here to buy new or used guns.*
You are going to have to go through an FFL if you buy from out of state no matter what. depending on what state you are in it may be legal for you to buy face to face legally in your state.
As for where to find one. Gunbroker is a good auction site. You have to remember to include $30 or so for shipping plus whatever the FFL will charge you. on the gunbroker site there is a " Find an FFL page " that will list local FFL’s and what they charge. This veries WIDELY fro kitchen table guys usually charging $25-$35 to the gun shop that really dpes not want to be botheres and will make his profit on you one way or another and try and sac you for $75-$100.
If you are looking for a face to face , If they are legal in your state. most gun websites have a classifieds section…..ar15.com, Glocktalk.com ect,,,( Which would probably be your cheapest option)
